Nicholas Dunkelbarger's Personal Statement:

As an individual who has been immersed in the world of sports since childhood, I have come to realize that my passion for athletics extends beyond mere enjoyment; it encapsulates everything I want to pursue in life. My journey, however, has been far from conventional. At the age of 12, my life took a tumultuous turn when my parents parted ways, leading to a series of adversities that tested my resilience. From coping with my mother's struggles with addiction to methamphetamines, to being abandoned by my mother in Sonoyta, Mexico without my wallet for identification to get back into America and having my identity stolen by my family, each challenge only fortified my resolve to carve out a future in the world of sports.
Today, I find myself in my second year of teaching, where I assume the roles of a history and strength & conditioning teacher, varsity assistant basketball coach, youth feeder program director, tournament director, and Sr. Recreation Leader in the Sports Department at the City of Apache Junction. These experiences have not only honed my leadership skills but have also reaffirmed my unwavering commitment to the realm of sports.
Beyond the professional sphere, I am blessed with a beautiful familymy wife, Miranda, a dedicated RN, and our two young children, Piper and Jet. Their presence serves as a constant reminder of the dreams I aspire to achieve. My ultimate goal is to become an Athletic Director, a pursuit rooted in an unyielding determination that has only been strengthened by the adversities I have conquered.
My journey has instilled in me a profound understanding of the transformative power of sports and the importance of strong, determined leadership within athletic administration. I am committed to utilizing my experiences and skills to drive positive change within this field, and I am unwavering in my dedication to realizing this ambition. There's a famous quote by Jimmy Valvano that I have always lived my life by, "Don't give up. Don't ever give up." If a terminally-ill cancer patient, can lecture that to the world, then why would I EVER give up.
