Certified Tutor

I am a graduate of The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. I received my Bachelor of Science in Geological Sciences with minors in mathematics and history. Since graduation, I have worked in two industries: over four years in environmental engineering and more recently for four years as a senior actuarial analyst.

I've always been interested in most all core middle and high school classes/topics (particularly math and history) and appreciated at a young age the power a teacher/tutor can have in fostering understanding and curiosity in students. I have tutored in the past to high school and college students while being a peer of my tutees and have more recently been a head youth basketball coach for the City of Raleigh, enjoying the teaching aspect of the sport. My philosophy for both tutoring math/history and coaching basketball is similar: Understand the communication style that works best for the student/player, ensure that fundamental skills are mastered before advancing to more difficult subjects, practicing the skills that will be routinely utilized in advanced topics, and to foster a curiosity towards the subject that allows the student to want to learn and understand the topic independently.

While I tutor a broad range of subjects, I am most passionate about History, Math, and Science. In my experience helping struggling students prepare for quizzes and tests, we seem to have the most growth while having discussions about the topic where the student explains to me how all of the concepts relate to one another and their practical applications.

I am a firm proponent of a well-rounded education, believing it to be absolutely necessary for an improved and balanced life, and I try to emphasize this belief to all of my students. In my spare time, I enjoy reading (history, the classics, and sports biographies), running, playing basketball, and contemplative walks on the beach!
