I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

I began my career in education after I was accepted into Teach for America (a highly-selective education government program that recruits and trains graduates from elite universities into the teacher workforce). During my service years, I discovered teaching was my superpower and never looked back.

Supporting my students at the highest level became my number one priority. When I was a math teacher in middle school/upper elementary, I sought out opportunities to hone my ability to teach literacy when I noticed many of my students struggled to decode word problems. I was trained to administer reading and writing tests to evaluate fluency and comprehension and used that information to guide instruction. I also learned how to support students with IEPs by focusing on neurodiversity in graduate school. Later in my career, I became a history teacher with a focus on developing my student's writing abilities.

In the middle of my teaching career, I was recruited to teach other teachers. While I was flattered and excited to be recognized for my talents, one of my major joys in life is being able to teach my students directly. Tutoring is the way I have the best of both worlds. I can continue to write curriculum and coach new educators while still working directly with young people outside the classroom as a tutor.

Personally, I've always been very bubbly and curious. I believe that young people benefit most when they are supported by adults, they trust so building trusting relationships with students is a big part of my practice. It's very important to me that young people also gain self-worth/acceptance alongside their schoolwork because a deep-rooted belief in yourself is the foundation of success.
