Certified Tutor
Hello! I am Professor Bill Murphy. By means of introduction, I have provided some information regarding my approach to teaching and who I am.
Teaching Philosophy:
The most important aspect of the tutoring session is getting your questions answered and clarifying concepts and procedures as are needed by you. These tutoring sessions belong to you. I am here to provide appropriate assistance. It is crucial that I know what you need, and if I am providing that. If I go off-track, please let me know before I waste all of your time.
Interrupt, shout, text in ALL CAPS, do whatever you need to do to alter the proceedings (i.e. my talking) and make the session productive for you.
Most students enter an Accounting/Finance classroom with a great deal of fear, which interferes with the learning process. My approach is to make the process less painful, using humor, relatable examples, and various alphabet-based models (Mnemonics) and the like.
I passionately believe that if the student is willing to do the work, I can find the right method to create an understanding of the material in the student. The university where I taught does not have an accounting major, so I have great experience in working with students for whom accounting is merely a dreaded course required to get the degree. When teaching, I held weekly out-of-class workshops, pre-exam review sessions and individual study sessions with my students. I bring this same approach to tutoring accounting in all of its forms.
About your Tutor:
I am a CPA (inactive) and have an undergraduate degree in accounting and Masters' degrees in Business Administration from Indiana University South Bend. I earned my degrees while maintaining full-time professional employment and helping my wife in raising our four children. I worked in industry, in both a Fortune 500 company (very big) and a small manufacturer. I have experience in accounting software consulting and installation, as well as the day to day accounting and finance functions. I began teaching part-time, then became a full-time professor. I taught accounting for 16 years at the University of Wisconsin Stout.
