I have been immersed in math my entire life. As a child there was the nightly competition at the dinner table to see who was fastest with their multiplication facts and playing school on our front porch on the weekends. As an undergrad at Northern Illinois University, I found my passion for math education through the help of a wonderful professor. He offered me the opportunity to go to graduate school as his research assistant where I would be immersed in middle school mathematics. Learning how people learn mathematics is fascinating to me. There are general statements that can be made about how people learn math but I very much enjoy the details specific to each individual. I have worked at the college level preparing preservice elementary teachers and helping students learn math as the Math Specialist in the Learning Center. From there I began a 20 year career teaching at a small independent K-12 school. My classes averaged about 14 students, and many times I taught them more than one math class, which gave me the opportunity to learn a variety of techniques to help people learn math. I sure hope I can help you too!

Hobbies

You can find me in my garden any day that is above 40 degrees. The beauty of nature astounds me. In fact, fractal geometry is my favorite math subject because it is nature's math. The creativity that comes with being a flower gardener takes time, so my other creative outlets are needed on the cold and rainy days. I cross stitch, make stained glass and draw. My themes are either nature or math.
