I am currently a junior college student at the University of Pittsburgh, where I study molecular biology and anthropology. My two areas of specialties, one in the sciences and the other in humanities provides me with a diverse and holistic background to education. I have loved the experience of tutoring students from all age groups. I mentored high school students in the disciplines of chemistry and physics, middle school children, and college students in the discipline of General Biology. Tutoring is very dear and near to my heart as I have in my journey been blessed with amazing teachers who have helped me along the way to become better. Through tutoring, I have been able to identify my passions in lifescience and in particularly biology. Tutoring can not only improve one's academic performance, but also open multiple doors of opportunity. It personally has for me and I couldn't be more thankful; it is one of the reasons that I am involved in tutoring. I've always loved working in academia as seen students growing and developing is rewardingI was once that person who benefited immensely from tutoringseeing someone else improve and reach for their goals is almost magical. As such, I am motivated to help othersa mission in my life and a larger goal as I hope to one day become a doctor.
My main teaching philosophy is to help students learn and identity fundamental techniques that they can then apply to future problems and situations. While I believe that content-based learning is crucial, I also believe that learning the principle skillsets and analytical techniques fares much better in the long run. Hence, I will strive to both address content-level and application-based techniques to best help students. Moreover, I am a firm believer in active learningthis means utilizing different sources of media (i.e textbook, YouTube videos, animations, graphs, images, etc) to best learn conceptsparticularly in science.
My specialties include tutoring in the STEM (Science, technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) field. STEM is a huge part in my life as I am currently a research assistant at the Vascular Institute of Medicine focusing on the intersectionality of Type 2 Diabetes and Immunology. I love being on the forefront of discovery as I get to apply the information that I have learned in the classroom to help better understand chronic diseases. My interest outside of tutoring and academia is placed heavily around sports. I love playing and watching basketball with my friends and familyit is an experience that brings everyone together. I also love cooking and making new recipescross-cultural understanding and awareness is a big part of my life and cooking is a tasty way of understanding someone else's culture.
