As a professional with a passion for education, learning and learning design, I believe that given all the data on learning environments and learners, one cannot deny that the ideal learning environment is one which incorporates real-life experience as much as possible and when not possible, provides for simulations of real-life settings using technology to bring the world to the learner and the learner to the world. Learners see relevance in realistic situations and are therefore engaged and motivated. Motivated and engaged learners explore complex situations, find connections, problem solve and deepen their understanding of the topics they are studying. These connections propel learners to branch out into other subject areas to explore and expand upon. While passing that test is of course very important, fostering curiosity creates a lifelong desire to grow our knowledge base. This will bring about a greater satisfaction in all we do.
