I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Certified Tutor

I recently moved to the Austin area from Portland, Oregon, where I worked as a 7th grade Language Arts teacher. I believe that educators should act as facilitators to learning, not merely lecturers. To this end, I strive to give students the tools to make their own discoveries rather than just 'giving them the answers.' Learning new skills can be tough, but it also can (and should!) be fun. My number one goal in education is to inspire students' curiosity, that way even when a subject is difficult, students can approach it with a sense of wonder instead of dread. This sets the stage for becoming a lifelong learner and thus benefiting from all the enrichment that mindset offers.

Hobbies

I enjoy reading, both fiction and nonfiction. I also love to write! I'm currently co-writing a novel with my best friend. I also spend time studying other languages, though I am not fluent in any other than English. All the reading and writing means I have to find ways to stay active, so I enjoy participating in community races such as 10Ks, sprint triathlons, and mud runs.
