I believe that students (and everyone) need to feel really heard. I think a strong teacher acknowledges that we bring our outside lives into the classroom and is open to teaching to the whole student. I teach an array of texts that reflect a diverse range of identities and ideologies. I bring humility into my tutoring practice by modeling the spirit of inquiry that I expect from my students.
I have experience teaching writing-based curriculum at the college level. I have taught at the University of Pittsburgh (English Comp, Intro to Journalism and Writing for Engineers) and Duquesne University (Gussin Spiritan Division English Comp).Outside of the classroom, I have led workshops and nine-week modules dedicated to educating the public about racial justice. I have written and presented lessons that delve into the intersections of racism, sexism, climate change, and GLBTQ identities. Additionally, in my former job at a social services agency, I completed a train-the-trainer program in SOGIE (sexual orientation, gender identity expression) sponsored by the Allegheny Department of Health.
