Mary Martha: Durham tutor

Certified Tutor

Hello! My name is Mary Martha, and I graduated from Brown University with a B.A. in Theatre Arts and Performance Studies. I also took every class in Disabilities Studies that Brown had to offer. I've tutored on a myriad of subjects throughout high school and college. I've found that every student learns in their own unique way and has the potential to be the golden child if they can unlock what study habits and hacks work best for them. My goal as a tutor is to help students and parents unlock those unique study tricks so that students can become self sufficient. My strengths as a tutor are writing, organization, public speaking and teaching children.

I received near perfect scores on the reading and writing portions of the SAT, but my passion is creative writing. I'm a published poet and have won several awards for fictional short stories, including a Gold Key from Scholastic for a short story and a merit award from YoungArts for a novel. As a college essay tutor, I helped students brainstorm and write unique college essays, sending them to schools like Dartmouth, Notre Dame, Vanderbilt, and Georgia Tech.

As an organizational tutor at Brown University, I helped college students with anxiety, depression, and related disorders organize their academic, social, and extra curricular schedules to accommodated their mental health needs. I also helped students discover and request accommodations from school that helped them succeed academically.

As my major was theater, helping students prepare for project presentations and public speaking is second nature to me. I studied public speaking under Barbara Tannenbaum who coaches not only Brown students, but also politicians.

Lastly, but certainly not least, I have always loved working with children, especially those who have trouble channelling their energy into school work. Every child is different, so each of my tutoring approaches is different. If a student can't sit still, we learn countries or write essays while staying physically active. If a student doesn't like writing, we find a way to make creative writing an easy to follow formula.

If you have any questions about me or my teaching methods, please don't hesitate to reach out. I am easy to reach and eager to teach!
