I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Ian

Certified Tutor

I have my Bachelor's in History from Trinity University, and my Master's in History from The College of William and Mary; I am just now about to begin my doctoral studies at the University of Oregon.

The subjects I tutor are history, philosophy, English, writing (essay editing, and the GRE written portion), and GRE verbal. My experience in both my undergraduate and graduate programs has provided me significant insight and knowledge into these fields. Previously, I've tutored freshman and sophomores in philosophy and writing during my undergraduate tenure; I've also, on a number of occasions, been asked by my peers to review and edit/critique their written work.

In terms of my teaching philosophy, I place a premium on engaging the student; teaching is often fruitless unless you convey to the student that what they are learning has value. I also believe in identifying two important expectations: what the student expects of me, the tutor; and what the student's teacher/professor/standardized test expects of them. Establishing these expectations is, to me, crucial for the teacher-student relationship.

Outside of my academic work, I enjoy playing music (mainly bass guitar, but I also play the guitar, mandolin, and the bouzouki, though I also like to dabble with the banjo and piano); reading, writing, and playing games on my PC. I also have three cats, whom--it goes without say--I adore.
