Having always aspired to be a physician, I was naturally drawn towards the biological sciences. I was especially intrigued by the remarkable workings of the human body, plumbing the depths of it through extensive research projects and advanced science courses. Biology classes, in particular, were effective not only in terms of providing me with academic knowledge, but also in demonstrating the applicability of biology through various labs. Labs were the ideal example of transforming textbook knowledge into real-life implementations.
Classroom labs soon evolved into research internships at the University of Illinois at Chicago itself. Working in a lung cancer research lab at the College of Medicine Research Building, I was exposed to the dynamic nature of the biological sciences. From manipulating cancer cell lines to performing polymerase chain reaction, I relished the ability to observe biology at work in bettering the human community. My knowledge of this program of study was no longer confined merely to the textbook or even to the classroom.
Biology is naturally intertwined with the health sciences. As a future medical professional, biology will be undeniably useful in almost any health-related matter I approach. A particular subject that is linked with both biology and medicine is genetics. Genetics is the area of biology that intrigues me the most. The ability to be informed of our predisposition to certain traits and diseases through our genetic makeup is fascinating to me.
Genetics is a microcosm of the evolving and progressive nature of biology. A main focus of the lung cancer lab I worked in was the study of cancer at the genetic and molecular level. Researchers sought to identify and inhibit the driving genetic forces of the onset of cancer. Often in areas of study, it is limited what a student or researcher can study, observe, or even influence. Biology, however, allows those pursuing it to gain invaluable insight into the structure, function, and growth of living systems themselves.
