I graduated from the University of Chicago in 2016 with a degree in Economics and am currently getting a Masters of Arts in Teaching at UChicago. I have experience working with kids at varying ages and levels and in different subjects. Currently, I am tutoring several students at a local elementary school in reading and math as well as a high school student in English. In the past, I've also worked at Kumon Math and Reading Learning Center for several years and volunteered at an after-school homework program at a church near my university. Though I enjoy seeing and helping all concepts click in students' minds, my favorite subject to tutor is definitely math. Math was something I was not necessarily good at as a young child, but through endless practice and lessons from the best "free" tutor, my mom, I was able to excel in it and placed in the top 20 in state-level math competitions. It quickly became my favorite subject because the process and path to mastery was addicting! As a product of tutoring programs, I think that tutors can be extremely helpful if they build on what the student currently understands to introduce new topics or skills. From my own experience and grasp of what my instructors are telling me now, I believe that students are extremely diverse learners, and it is up to the tutor to understand which methods will help that learning process. Flexibility, perceptiveness, perseverance, and patience are all things I believe tutors need. My approach is to see what the student knows first, ask a lot of questions, explain things multiple ways, and test for understanding. Learning is a reciprocal process, so I definitely believe in soliciting feedback from students and parents. Outside of academia, I enjoy running by the lake, preserving fall foliage, playing with dough (real, not play-doh), and playing violin.
