Soren
Certified Tutor
I began teaching at the college level nearly ten years ago, and have taught courses in writing, literature, philosophy, and history. I have taught a wide diversity of students in a variety of contexts at several different institutions, including a one-an-a-half year tenure in Senegal working with West African students. As a professor, I have always highly valued opportunities to work with students on a one-on-one basis, and this experience led me to seek out work as a tutor. As a tutor I am most passionate about teaching writing, critical thinking, history and philosophy.
I am a currently a doctoral student in the Philosophy Department at Stony Brook University, presently in the dissertation writing phase of the program. I have a MA in Art History and Theory from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a BFA in Painting from Maryland Institute College of Art.
When beginning to work with a student no matter the level of the student or the subject matter to be covered I always make sure that the student and I are on the same page. This means, in the first place, that I understand exactly what the students goal is and what she or he wants and needs from me. It also means that the student understands how I plan to facilitate the achievement of her or his goal. I am also sure to learn from the student what she or he feels to be their greatest weakness or source of difficulty in the pursuit of their goal. Establishing all of these things at the outset allows me to devise the most effective lessons and the ensures that the tutoring process is as effective and efficient as possible.
