Ever since my freshman year in college, I've developed a deep interest in how people learn and share knowledge with each other. Over the course of college, I pursued this interest by working with communities to research and address gaps in knowledge. From taking service-learning, education courses, I began tutoring students to continually pursue my goal in building more knowledgeable communities.
My community-based work informs how I approach tutoring, infused with collaborative principles of working together to solve problems. While this mindset may seem to make the most sense for math, I also like to apply this framework with writing and other subjects. As a tutor at Larkin Street Youth Services, an organization devoted to serving homeless youth, I faciliated and led a storytelling group. The youth worked through some of the issues they faced by writing, through which they also built community in sharing their stories. I hope to continue doing this type of work and helping students have that feeling of success from meeting their goals.
