If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I will find different ways to explain the same material. Sometimes, I use real-life examples.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Finding synonymous of words that have not been understood in the reading, and asking him/her questions about the topic.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

By keeping the student motivated and alert with questions about how to approach the problem. That way, one will know what level the student is, and one can explain to the student whether or not the solution was correct.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

By direct questions about the topic and/or by doing a pop quiz.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

By reviewing what the student had done with the homework, school quizzes, and tests, and how the student approaches problems, so I can see where steps and/or skills are missing and need more strength.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

Each student is different, some are visual learners or listeners and others are autodidacts. According to the type of person, I will tutor in the way of the student's preference.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I prepare my own material, such as study guides, small quizzes, games related to the material, etc. If the student has difficulty understanding, sometimes I will bring objects related to the topic for better visualization.

What is your teaching philosophy?

If I can do it, anyone can do it too.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I will let the student introduce himself/herself to break the ice. Next, I will ask him/her for their school notes, and finally, the session will start.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

By setting small goals.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

First, it is important to know what the student likes, and then associate it with the subject that will be covered.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

By congratulating the student anytime that he/she approaches the solution correctly, and by avoiding the use of words that could discourage him/her when the answer is incorrect.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

One way could be by challenging him/her to solve a problem as fast as he/she can, and with this technique, some students feel the need of practice alone. Another way is by giving him/her homework that has to be done before the next session.
