Carrissa: Hialeah tutor
Certified Tutor
I received my Bachelor's of Arts from the University of California, Santa Cruz, and will soon receive my Master's of Arts from Howard University. I specialize in tutoring English literature and history. As a historian, history is my strongest subject, as I generally teach historical topics as a narrative rather than just facts. I believe that identifying what a student's interests are, and how they learn the best, can improve their understanding of subjects. I enjoy music, movies, and travel.

What is your teaching philosophy?
To teach history as a narrative, rather than a fact-by-fact basis.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
Assess their pre-conceived notions of the historical topic that they are studying.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
I would break down the subject with them as much as I could, in order to identify where there understanding is going amiss.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
duplicate
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
Find the niche in the subject that applies to their own interests and build on that.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
By determining what kind of learner they are (oral, visual, etc.) and playing to their strengths.
