What is your teaching philosophy?

"Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world." - Nelson Mandela

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I will introduce myself and ask them their likes and dislikes of being taught.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

By giving them study tips and guiding them in the right direction with different resources.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Keep telling them what a good job they are doing. Tell them that you will get this information soon enough, just put the effort forth.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Take it step by step. Introduce some online assistance. Go through problems or scenarios to get a better understanding. Use real life situations to make information clear.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I will have them read the selection in parts, and then have them tell me what they understood from that section. Then, gradually, connect each section together.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I would have them demonstrate the skill in different problems or scenarios to show comprehension.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

When they get the answers correct or begin to understand the material, I believe encouragement and praise go a long way.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

By observing them when working and asking them some questions about the subject to get a grasp of the student's needs.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

It depends on the subject, but normally I use paper, pencil, and, when necessary, a calculator.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Understand their learning style and their likes and dislikes when it comes to the way someone teaches them something.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

If the student is not understanding the material, I will provide different teaching methods until I see improvement in the student.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Telling them something along the lines of "a master was not always a master; he had to learn first." I would help them get engaged by boosting their confidence and providing motivation.
