I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

What is your teaching philosophy?

Don't tell the student the answer; ask the right questions and let the student figure it out.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Get a list of goals from the student, (i.e. what the student wishes to get out of this tutoring session). Try and understand the student's learning style and adapt my teaching style accordingly.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Help the student figure out how he/she learns best and push him/her to become better at that. Help the student reach the answer/solve the problem rather than just giving them the answer/solution.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Make the student responsible for his/her progress; that way his/her level of success depends on them.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

First, figure out what the student does and does not understand, and then walk through learning the concept along with the student rather than teaching them the concept. That way the student knows how to relearn it if need be.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Compare the subject to something they are interested in (i.e. compare loading weights on the barbell to math problems).

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Have the student teach the concept to me; this way I can gauge if the student understands every step/nuance of the material.
