Today we primarily covered the multiple choice questions related to the SAT writing section, as the student's scores in critical reading and mathematics are exceptional. In particular, we worked on the practice tests, as well as a few additional practice questions located within the SAT test prep book. We also discussed the essay, although the student's essay writing is very good. For homework, I would like the student to review the writing portion from Session 1 within the test prep book , as well as complete the assigned questions at the end of the session.

In light of the impending test on Saturday, the student decided to go for two sessions on Friday in order to best prepare for the test. He seemed to have a better sense of subject/verb agreement and pronoun errors, but he still needed a bit of instruction when it came to verb tense and verb form. We reviewed the remaining grammar concepts that we hadn't covered including prepositions, idioms, and faulty comparisons in addition to reviewing the assessment grammar strategies for the test itself based on the three question types. We spent additional time on the improving paragraph section since we needed to transition to critical reading based on a helpful discussion of reading for the main idea and skimming in both reading and writing sections of the assessment. We concluded the session with two grammar practice sections.

We covered grammar rules in idioms today. Idioms tend to be the hardest part of the writing test because they do not follow any specific rules. We reviewed the most common idioms on the SAT and then completed sample problems. I then timed and scored the student on a 25 and 10 minute writing section. She was able to complete the 25 minutes section in 17 minutes and score 32/35 on the first section and 9/10 on the second section. So if her essay score increases to a 10, she will be in the 700 range on the total writing section. I am still waiting on her to complete a sample essay so that I can review it with her and work on how the improve her score. We will focus on the essay over the next few sessions.
