I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Certified Tutor

Helping others to learn and grow is something I'm passionate about. I also believe in the value of education, more than as a means to an end (career and income), but as an end in itself. Education is its own reward!

I educated students, age 5 to 17, for a total of about a year with AtoZ Tutoring. I worked for AtoZ on and off for about a year and a half. The students I taught were part of No Child Left Behind, and we practiced all school subjects so they could catch up with their cohort. I also volunteered for the Athens Area Homeless Shelter (Georgia) for 6 months, where I tutored and played games with children. I also have some experience working with children with autism.

In my teaching style and tutoring philosophy, I see myself as the coach and mentor. I'm there to help each student be the best he or she can be -- to work out that brain muscle! I'm there to challenge, motivate, and engage each student.

Subjects I tutor include elementary and middle school science; elementary through high school math (through algebra, trigonometry, and geometry); elementary through high school history and social studies; and elementary through high school English. I enjoy tutoring all subjects, but I have a particular affinity for English, history, and social studies. I enjoy reading and writing, especially essay, memoir, poetry, news, and current events.

Regarding my education, I earned my B.A. from Antioch College in 2005 in social and global studies (political science, economics, international relations, and environmental policy). I also completed all but my thesis for an M.S. in journalism from Ohio University. I plan to return to school for a Masters of Social Work from NC State in the fall of 2017.

Outside of my intellectual and professional pursuits, I enjoy weight training, health and fitness, cooking and nutrition, meditation, poetry, photography, and the great outdoors.
