What is your teaching philosophy?

I teach to educate and inspire.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

In a typical first session with a student, my main goal is to understand the student's individual interests and learning style. This includes approaching the material from multiple different angles, to get a feel for which way the student comprehends more effectively and efficiently.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I aim to help students become independent learners by helping to foster positive learning skills, and motivating students to become more engaged in their material.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

My goal is to have students learn efficiently and effectively. If a student has difficulty learning a particular skill or concept, I will shift the focus of the material to approach learning the subject from an angle the student will better connect with.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Exercises with synonyms and alternative phrasing are excellent for students who struggle with reading comprehension!

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

I've found that patience, kindness, and positive reinforcement are the keys to success when working with new students.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I've found that connecting subject material with areas that students are actually interested in is the best way to get students excited and engaged! For example, if a student is passionate about the musical Hamilton, a lesson on reading comprehension could shift from some boring, unrelated handouts, to an activity comparing song lyrics and phrasing couplets!

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Having students approach material in comprehensible ways, and then having them teach-back what they've learned, is the best way to ensure they understand the material they've been given.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Providing a lot of positive reinforcement is the best way to build a student's confidence in a subject!

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I evaluate a student's needs by keeping an open line of communication with them, to ensure they are comfortable dictating what they do and do not understand.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I adapt my tutoring skills to the needs of the student by regularly asking for feedback regarding the lesson, to ensure the student understands with and connects to my particular teaching style. If complications occur, I will adapt accordingly!

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

My typical materials include online sources, pen-and-paper handouts, and anything else I might come across to reproduce and give to the child I am working with.
