Kim: Greenburgh tutor
Certified Tutor
Throughout my career and education the underlying motivation has been to help individuals fully recognize their potential. I believe that each of us is capable of achieving success but realize that our pathways to success may vary, just as our means of learning information will vary. Some learn through discussion, others through doing, others through listening to lectures - my point is we all have the ability to learn just about anything we set our minds to, we just need to discover the ways that we learn best.
My academic background is rooted in student development theory and though my professional roles are outside this area, the skills sets developed in my academic career are used in my day to day interactions with industry leaders. What is clear to me is that every successful individual attained that success by learning how they learned best and then committed to doing just that.
I view my role as a tutor as a that of a coach who will help you discover your strengths and unearth the full power of your innate talents.

What is your teaching philosophy?
My philosophy is simple; we all are capable of tackling any subject matter we put our minds to. The key is discovering and learning how we learn best. Armed with the self-knowledge of how we best learn, we can accomplish anything we set our minds to.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
Typical first sessions will focus on getting to know my client, his or her aspirations, what current challenges they face, and understanding how they have been approaching the subject matter thus far. Knowing where we are beginning and where we want to go is key, so the first session will be spent exploring those things and beginning to develop a roadmap for success together.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
Personal empowerment is key. When you are able to find mini-successes along the way, it will help boost your confidence in your own abilities. My job as a tutor is to help you see what you are capable of - it may not seem like a given subject is within your reach, but my job is to help you see how attainable it is.
