Certified Tutor

I am a graduate of Tulane University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics. I received my Master of Education in Administration and Supervision from Nicholls State University. I have been an educator for over 15 years and have a passion for math. I love to see when that ???light bulb??? comes on and students understand a concept. That is very rewarding. I firmly believe that anybody can have success with math. Math has its own language. Once you learn the language, you too can be successful. I can help with that! I am a firm believer in the power of education as a key to open doors of opportunity and to improve the quality of life. In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with my family, watching football and basketball, playing football game on PS3 and Bible study.

What is your teaching philosophy?

Know more than you need to know, for you never know when you'll need to know more!

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Learn the student's interest level in the subject matter and their expectations from the tutoring experience.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Help them firm up a solid foundation in the subject matter and achieve some success. Then, encourage them to continue succeeding.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Remind them of the successes they have had and encourage them not to give up!

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Have them take notes on what they have read, and paraphrase concepts.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Identify where they are uncomfortable in a subject and try to show them how to be successful.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Help them achieve some success and build on it. You eat an elephant one bite at a time!

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Have them reteach a concept to me. If you can teach someone else, you have mastered the concept.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

Establish a firm grip on basic concepts and build on them.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

Questioning for understanding.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

Identify what the student needs and focus on that.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

Paper, pencil, and calculator.
