Certified Tutor
Hello there! My name is Courtney and I'm currently a Junior at Smith College majoring in East Asian Languages and Culture. I've always been fascinated with different Asian cultures since I was younger, and decided to try to pursue a career related to Japan which will allow me to live and work there. I already gained one experience working in Japan where I helped conduct a women's empowerment program for over 100 young women in 5 schools across Japan. This experience helped me to realize my passion for mentoring. Despite Japanese language and culture being my main field of study, I also have experience doing STEM research in a joint Chemistry & Psychology department project which studied the representation of women and people of color in major STEM publications. I am very much interested in education, business, and government and hope that I can apply my various life experiences into helping those who I tutor also find their academic success and passions.

What is your teaching philosophy?
My teaching philosophy centers on creating a culture where asking for help is not shamed, but is actually encouraged. I believe that no student should ever feel like they are less simply because it may take them longer to understand the material. I went through school with no help, and I wished I had developed the ability to ask for help earlier on in my academic career. Now I proudly ask for help, and give help to those who ask me for it. When you have support, academics gets easier and less stressful!
