What is your teaching philosophy?

Each individual has different ideas and perspectives that can be beneficial to others in a multicultural learning environment. Teachers as facilitators should be aware of students' attitudes, experiences and beliefs, and gear them towards intellectual and professional development.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would introduce them to the concept/subject, tell them about me, and also learn about them. This will give them a level of comfort.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I would guide them towards the steps of learning: prepare/practice/progress.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I would implore the fact that nothing in life comes easy without hard work, which equates with success.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would reteach/repeat/redefine.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I would help students to identify main ideas/ supporting details/ facts/opinions/ etc.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

I find that recapping previous lessons help.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

i would use mnemonic devices as well as real-life scenarios. In a more classroom-oriented setting, I would use electronic learning devices; for example, I would show a video clip (in cartoon settings) in order to complement/supplement and cushion their learning.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

I would let the student do a reciprocal explanation after sessions.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

I would remind the student that practice is the best way to conquer fears and be good at something.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I would evaluate students' needs by their weaknesses in a subject/concept.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I would try different learning techniques and see what work best.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I use the materials supplied by the tutoring company or materials prescribed by the school. If, however, I have materials that would complement the student's level and need, I would use them as a back-up.
