I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Mattias: Central City tutor

Certified Tutor

My name is Mattias and I recently graduated from Stanford University with a degree in Economics and in International Relations. I am currently working in a Bronx Public School as a teaching apprentice in Algebra. I have four years of experience tutoring one on one with students of all ages.

I enjoy tutoring for the chance to develop personalized lessons for students founded on a trusting relationship rather than the transactional and memorization based education I felt I predominantly received growing up. I am energized most by the rare look in student's eyes when they finally cement the connection they have hovered on the edge of making. Watching the second grade students whose tutors I coordinated make those connections has made me consider teaching as a profession, and I hope by tutoring with Varsity I can continue my developing journey in the field of education.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

An engaging, low-floor high-ceiling activity that allows students to enter the task regardless of their previous knowledge but simultaneously contains constant potential extension if the student excels at the task. This would allow me to gain some idea of the student's current knowledge. Ideally, it would be a fun group task that would allow us to work together and get to know each other better, as well!

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Never provide a direct answer or a leading question. Always ask the student to brainstorm and list strategies for solving the problems that do not require me.
