Miles

Certified Tutor

Miles has been a tutor for a university level mathematics department working one-on-one with math students to personalize a teaching approach that helps them not only understand how to perform the required math computations but set a motivation for their coursework. He was a professor's assistant at a university level physics department providing lectures in the physics lab setting with little to no professor oversight. Miles helped the students through the experimental and data collection process as well as set the standard for grades the required lab reports. Miles was also a home school group tutor providing a mini-lecture and overview of the lessons home-schooled individuals prepared for while challenging them in a classical and socratic format to provoke deep reasoning and critical thinking skills.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

The key aspect of creating a learner is creating a motivated soul. Most of my efforts towards helping a student become an independent learner will be focused on making sure the student is motivated in the subject area they are studying for any reason, but if the student is motivated, he or she is automatically an independent learner because they will search for these answers naturally.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I'd give them examples of real world problems that were solved with the skill sets they learn in their classes. Give them a vision of what it looks like to excel in their class. Give them an understanding of how the subject(s) or topic(s) they are currently studying revolutionized the way I think about the world in such a positive way.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I, even in my personal readings, have to slow way down and break the sentence down into its base components to understand what is happening in the sentence. Sometimes, I even draw diagrams and sketches to keep all the information straight, but they relentlessly challenge the student to strive for efficiency in this process.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

The Socratic format of learning is an extremely powerful way of starting with a student because it helps me as a tutor to really understand so much about the student.
