Certified Tutor

I am graduate of Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana with a degree in Social Studies Education. After graduation, I moved to San Antonio to start my career as a teacher.

I have been a certified teacher for 15 years. After 10 years as a full time teacher and getting my Masters Degree in Education Administration, I embarked on a new journey and became an instructional coach. This is the position I have held for the last 5 years. I work with my fellow teachers on improving the quality of instruction and increasing student achievement.

I firmly believe that all students can be successful and it is our job as teachers, tutors, etc. to figure out how to help students be successful.

In my free time, I enjoy trying out new recipes, reading and exploring San Antonio and the surrounding areas. I also love trips to the beach.

What is your teaching philosophy?

Every student can be successful!

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would do a short icebreaker with the student so we can get to know each other and start working on building a relationship.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I would provide examples and tips on how to take ownership of their learning and move towards being an independent learner.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I would find out what interests the students and create incentives for progress.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would continue to try new ways to teach the concept until the student demonstrated mastery.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I would use a variety of instructional methods to help the students with reading comprehension. Reading comprehension would be embedded in every session and in addition to teaching it in isolation.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

As a certified teacher, there are many strategies that have been successful in helping my students. I would take the time to get to know the student I am working with and find out what works best for them.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I would make the lessons, concepts, etc., as relevant to the student's life as possible. The lessons would be engaging for the student to participate in.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

There are a variety of formative assessments I would use along the way to make sure students understand the material.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

I would start with small successes and build upon those to create and sustain confidence in a particular subject.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

You evaluate a student's needs by getting to know them and seeing where the struggles and strengths are and then building lessons around those.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

It's about the relationships you build with the students. You determine what their needs are and then build lessons around where the student is.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I would use a variety of materials from online resources, manipulatives, flashcards, note taking strategies, etc.
