I am a current ELA Middle School Teacher in New York City. I have provided whole and small group reading instruction aligned to the Common Core Standards. Before moving to New York in late 2011, I completed my Master's degree at Boston University in Teaching and Curriculum.
Teaching is not only instructional but social, and it is rooted in building relationships. While it is important to be firm, it's equally important to have a relationship with students and parents. My philosophy stems from years of public service after college. In 2008 I was a corps member at City Year Boston in which I taught literacy to disadvantaged students. Soon after, I joined Teach For America in 2009 as a corps member and worked in the Boston Public School system. I was lucky enough to teach a range of grades (Grade 2-8) in both public and private school settings.
I enjoy teaching, moreover I love READING! Literacy is my passion. Teaching kids to read is a difficult task; there is no one magic bullet. There are many factors I target while teaching or supporting a struggling/reluctant reader. I also try to instill a joy of reading to struggling/reluctant readers by exposing the student to different types of literature and using other methods. I tutor students as an opportunity to reach more students and support them with reading. I look forward to working with your child.
