Ryan: Downey tutor

Certified Tutor

I am currently an undergraduate student at New York univerisity, majoring in psychology and minoring in chemistry. I am also completing pre-med coursework. I have taken advanced classes in Spanish as well. I am a very patient and understanding tutor. I always try to be encouraging. By breaking questions down into smaller components, I help students by finding errors in their logic or gaps in their knowledge to increase their understanding of the subject matter. I am especially passionate about preparing students for the college application process, by editing college essays, helping with test prep, or improving their high school GPA.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I will start by introducing myself and giving the students some information about my educational background and areas of study. I will ask the students about themselves and what areas of study they feel comfortable with and what they need some help with. I will also ask the students about their study methods and how they feel they study best to try to improve upon their study habits.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

I can help a student become an independent learner by teaching them the study skills needed for attacking homework and readings. I will try to help them improve upon their time management skills and prioritization skills.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I think the best motivation for students is seeing progress in their own study habits. By providing continuous encouragement and support to students, I believe their grades and scores will improve. If they see that putting in the work results in better understanding of subject material, I believe they will stay motivated.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept I will be very patient and supportive. I will never belittle a student or give up hope. I will try to explain the concept or skill in as many ways as I can think of until something clicks. Once they feel they have a grasp on the concept or skill, I will give them practice problems to make sure that they fully understand the skill or concept that they were struggling with.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I would break down passages and sentences into their component parts to figure out what the student is struggling with. Analyzing passages in smaller pieces can make reading comprehension more manageable and less stressful!
