I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Certified Tutor

I tutor because I truly enjoy teaching students and seeing them gain confidence as they overcome their academic challenges. As a student from kindergarten through graduate school, my teachers and professors were role models that I admired and used as models for my own behavior. One of my proudest moments was working as an undergraduate instructor as part of my doctoral program at Northeastern University. Walking in the classroom and getting to stand at the front of the classroom for the first time, completing my journey from one side of the classroom to the other, I could not have been happier

I bring the same passion and enthusiasm to tutoring that I do to teaching, and am always proud to see one of my former students go on to achieve further academic success.

What is your teaching philosophy?

Help students think through any difficulty they are encountering with a subject or exam. I've been both a one-on-one tutor and an undergraduate instructor and emphasize building trust with the student in order to accelerate the learning process and make it more participatory whenever possible.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Encourage them! Students of all ages (even adult learners) need encouragement and validation when they make a breakthrough or when they feel stuck in the mud. Part of the tutor's job is to not only to teach, but also to motivate.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Practice, practice, and more practice. There may come a point when a new technique or explanation is necessary, but repetition is the quickest way to learn.
