What is your teaching philosophy?

My teaching philosophy is that if you are not having fun, you are not learning. I encourage every student to find a way to make learning fun!

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I would determine the student's strengths and weaknesses in the field, and show them how they can use one to overcome the other.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Teaching a student how to solve a problem is always about teaching a bigger concept-- something they can take home with them and use again on their own time. This is the hallmark of good teaching.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I help my students focus on little victories. Big problems can always be broken up into smaller, simpler, often easier problems that any student can solve and feel great doing it.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

It is important to maintain patience with any student that might be struggling with a concept. I would take a multi-faceted approach to teaching concepts and problem solving to ensure that I cover all possible learning styles.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Learning the student’s desires for education can really help build a relationship. Tutoring any student with their goals in mind will certainly lead to the most success!

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I would remain patient to whatever the students needs are.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I believe that you learn best when you are having fun. Although not all students will believe that their math homework can be fun, if you engage them in such a way to make it a game, or to challenge them in a way that they can get excited about their work, they are more likely to succeed.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

After teaching a concept, I try to provide examples or practice for the student to showcase the concepts back to me. This can help me confirm if they have successfully learned the concept and help me gather an additional understanding of how they learn. Then I can make real-time adjustments to how I teach.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

I build my students confidence about everything. Their strengths as well as weaknesses. It is important that my students know whey they are doing well in a subject, but it is also important to know how they fail. I often remind my students that there was always a point when each of us didn't know something; it is okay to not know something, or to mess up. This usually makes them realize that the weight of being wrong isn't so bad, but just another opportunity to be right.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I check in with my students frequently. Not all students will be so clear about whether or not they understand the material- some will even lie. This is common. A good teacher can sense these things, and I strive to always read my students and help them become far more confident in what they do.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

Teaching is not a single fixed skill, but a dynamic one. You must be able to adjust on the fly. In my experience, I have worked with students who learn from a variety of different ways and my standard methods have had to change. Students are far more receptive if you adjust to their style of learning. It shows compassion, which helps build your relationship with them.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

I keep a good library of materials such as old textbooks and good online resources. I am quick to read through any resources that help identify the best way to explain a topic. In some cases, I can even provide these resources for the student so they can use them on their own.
