Certified Tutor

In 2015 I graduated from DePaul University with a degree in Chemistry. During the course of my degree I taught multiple classes and was a walk-in tutor for the Science and Math learning center. In my years of being a teacher and a student I've found there is always more than one way to explain any given subject. Moreover, since everyone comes from a different background some explanations make more sense than others to different people. With me as your tutor I will find a way to explain science and math concepts that make the most sense to you.

What is your teaching philosophy?

Anyone can learn anything they choose. It is all just a matter of having questions framed and answered in ways that make sense to the student.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

First, I try to establish what background knowledge the student has in whatever subjects are needed. Then we set our goals for what we want to accomplish that session or for the next week. Then, knowing those goals, we dive into the material.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

You have to build up their ability to ask questions and share your passion for the subject with them. If you can ask a question and be passionate about finding an answer, everything else will follow.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I always try to share stories of when I was struggling or how I accomplished something. Students need to understand that people who are experts in their field or are knowledgeable about a topic did not get there all at once.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

Break it down to the conceptual fundamentals. If we understand those then we can build up.
