Certified Tutor

I am an upcoming, first-year law student. Originally from San Francisco, CA, I graduated with a UCLA Political Science major and a Chinese minor. I am currently on the NCAA D1 rowing team for the Bruins. I like baking, reading, and lifting weights, and I am an avid foodie who loves discovering new places!

As a Peer Learning Facilitator at the UCLA Athletics Peer Learning Lab, I developed customized strategies to help student-athletes reach their highest academic performance. Strategies included teaching time-management methods and ways to better organize notes or improve studying. I did this by soliciting feedback, working with peers, monitoring individual progress, and ensuring student satisfaction with my work. My job was client focused, and I was receptive to all feedback from my clients and received positive reviews from them. Furthermore, I served as a research assistant in the social and biomedical sciences, where I have developed multiple transferrable skills working in UCLA on the Gourmet Food Truck Industry with Prof Edward Walker (Sociology) and the UCSF Biomagnetic Imaging Laboratory with Prof Sri Nagarjan (Radiology). Valuable skills in accurate data entry, data filtering and analysis, and statistical evaluations are transferrable across many career industries and I hope to bring what I have learned to others.

What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe in guiding students towards main concepts and details through facilitated learning and enjoyment of the material.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Go over basic biographical details, find things in common, and then talk about their goals and perhaps start on relevant course material.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Through teaching good study habits and helping them devise strategies to allocate both studying and time more efficiently.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

By reminding them of the big picture.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

I would find other ways to explain a concept or how to teach the skill. There are always different ways to teach something -- some are more effective than others per individual.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I encourage them to do active reading -- highlight, underline, and make notes in the margins as they go along.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

I have found that genuinely making sessions with students fun helps them retain knowledge, and in some cases motivates them to learn more about the course material. I find that bringing in real-world applications are often helpful.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

Change the lens they see the subject through by showing them multiple applications of the subject in the world.

What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?

Asking the student to explain the material to me, quizzes, and worksheets.

How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?

As each topic is covered, I ensure that they understand that topic, first by having them explain the basics and what they know, then eventually building up their confidence towards the correct answers for more detailed questions.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

I speak with the student and work with them over multiple sessions to truly understand learning preferences, goals, and their current abilities.

What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?

It varies -- online videos, short quizzes, worksheets, drawings, and summaries.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I find how the student learns best, i.e. visual, kinesthetic, or auditory learning, and work with him/her through the main method(s) the student prefers.
