What is your teaching philosophy?

I believe anyone can learn anything with the right approach. Everyone has their own learning style and once you figure out how you learn there is no limit to what you can accomplish.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

I want to know your favorite types of music, tv shows, movies and family traditions so that I can come up with better ways to tailor information to you.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

With strategies such as guided discovery and with an emphasis on how to study, as well as studying together, we can strive for more independence.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Sometimes reward systems work, however I think the best way to keep a student motivated is by increasingly pointing out the relevance between whatever topic and their own life. In a way, understanding more about what you're learning helps you understand yourself, no matter what age.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

By getting to know my students I get to know what their strengths are, and I can adjust whatever I'm teaching best fit their learning style.

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

Reading comprehension takes into account two things: vocabulary and topical understanding. First we need to make sure that the student understands all that they're encountering. After that we break down the concepts and ideas into more digestible pieces, and then put them all together at the end.
