Diana
Certified Tutor
My name is Diana and background is in the sciences. I have tutored all ages and was a teacher for younger children. I currently work at a school as management so I am missing the teaching portion of my life. I have developed various strategies and tips not just for students but myself throughout college. What may work for one person may not work for another even from subject to subject.
I am patient and work to help aid students with academic challenges and goals.
In my free time I love spending time with my family and pets. I love to go outside but also enjoy cuddling up to watch a movie and nap.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
Get to know the student and see their comfort level with the topic. It is best to see what is being done in order to tweak practices and perfect studying time.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
It's best to guide and sit by the student’s side. The student should be the 'driver,' and the tutor helps guide the student in a better direction.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
Mini-successes are great motivation to move on to the next goal!
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
First, make sure any skills and concepts learned prior were learned properly as well as understood. Knowing where the student first started getting behind makes learning of new concepts much easier.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
Breaking up a passage and making sure the general idea of the passage is understood. Once moving on to the questions about the passage, it is easier to dissect the reading.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
Developing trust and patience.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
When a student sees the concept is one they can learn and master, learning is easier and can be exciting!
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
Questioning a student with different styles or wording.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
NO negative criticism. This destroys a student's confidence. Positive criticism and short term goal markers make a big, tough lesson easier to manage.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
Reviewing previous assignments and presenting material in different forms.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
Some students need confidence building, while others need guidance in the right direction. Every student's needs are different. It's my job to see what styles work best with them.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
Study guides and folders. It is important to be organized. Visuals are also great aids in understanding concepts.
What is your teaching philosophy?
Mini goals and positive reinforcement are best in shaping an unsteady student. One step made correctly is more valuable than ten uneasy ones.
