Shayan
Certified Tutor
I'm a pre-health student at the University of Pennsylvania, and have an extensive background in the sciences. I can also rock the SATs and MCAT, so I've got that going for me. I love learning with students and trying to make the tedious work of learning as fun as possible. I think and teach in examples and make abstract concepts easily understandable. I also love sports, adventures, travelling!

What is your teaching philosophy?
My teaching philosophy is to teach in a way that makes materials understandable, accessible, and applicable to the real world!
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
Get to know them better, and start the lesson while trying to get to know what works best for their learning style.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
I don't just teach the material, but also teach them how to think about the material in a way that lets them learn independently when I'm not there.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
Keeping the learning process exciting, and making the material that we learn relevant and applicable to the real world, helps motivate my students.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
For any concept or skill, there's lots of ways of approaching it, and if one way isn't working, we can always try different approaches that might be easier for the student, depending on their specific teaching style.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
It helps to go slow and take the time to see where they are struggling specifically, and work on that together, whether it be understanding the words, understanding the sentences, or understanding the meaning the author is trying to convey.
