I'm excited to be part of the Varsity Tutor's team and help students feel more confident in their studies! I just graduated from medical school and I am applying for residency. In the meantime, I would love to spend my time tutoring students. I really like to make learning as simple and fun as possible. I have experience teaching Cognitive Science to undergraduate students at UCSD and tutoring medical students for board exams. I look forward to helping students achieve their short or long term goals in the most efficient way.

What is your teaching philosophy?
My philosophy is to teach in a way that caters to each student. Every student is different, and my goal is to make sure my students feels comfortable with what they learned so they can tackle any upcoming exam or homework assignment with confidence!
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
I would want to see what my student's current level of understanding is regarding the particular topic he/she is struggling with. From this, I can get a strong sense of what my student needs to improve upon. Then, together, we can create an organized tutoring plan to target his/her areas of weakness!
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
By instilling strong learning and study habits early on. More often than not, I have found that repetition and practice is the key to success!
How would you help a student stay motivated?
I would want to help my student make long-term goals in their education that would translate into a successful career. If my student is able to foresee how what they are working for now will help them get to where they want to be in the future, this can be a very strong motivation!
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
I would change the way I teach the concept.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
I would have the student try different reading tactics, such as reading faster or slower. I would try to lessen the anxiety the student may experience with reading.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
When a student comes to me for help, that means they are already halfway there because I know they WANT to improve. In beginning sessions, I like to get a sense of my student’s current level of knowledge. From there, we create a strong plan of attack for their weakness. I emphasize that organization skills, practice, and confidence are the key to success!
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
I would encourage them to teach or try to explain the subject back to me, their friends, or their family. This instills confidence in my students, and when they feel confident, they will want to learn and study more.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
Practice questions are a sure way to engage my students and to assess their amount of growth.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
By having the student try to explain the subject back to me or others.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
By asking the student what they struggle with. Also, by giving them initial questions/tests to assess their current level of knowledge.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
I ask the student if they would like me to teach from a different angle. Usually I don't need to ask this, because I will know if a student is improving or not by their performance on homework assignments and quiz/exam scores.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
Paper, pencil, two brains and sometimes objects to demonstrate certain math concepts.
