What is your teaching philosophy?
That everyone can learn given the right set of circumstances.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
First we discuss what is required of the student, explore where they are with the information and map out a strategy for success
How would you help a student stay motivated?
I help the student develop goals and a time frame to achieve the goals.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
First we find out what the difficulty is, and I help the student locate sources to help them achieve the concept.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
I will have a student read or write material and tell me in their words what they have read.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
We talk about what is required of a student, and I will ask the student to read out loud or submit a sample of their writing.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
On the first session I will ask that the student show me what materials they have to complete. I will also ask them to give me an idea of what they need from me to be successful, and we set out to map out a strategy.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
Not to assume anything, but learn from the student where they are and where they need to be.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
I would tell them that everyone has challenges; we just have to learn where they are and where they need to be.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
Tell them that they can achieve results if they keep on working on it.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
I adapt my tutoring to the student's level of need.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
It will depend on what a student needs. I will start with reading requirements for their work and locate appropriate resources.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
I will tell them that repetition, practice and writing what they have read will be helpful.
