Katelyn: Crest Hill tutor
Certified Tutor
I am a certified high school English teacher with three years of experience teaching and designing curricula for 9th, 10th, and 10th Honors English for the KIPP charter network. My love of English literature, language, and writing formed the basis of my college career; I graduated summa cum laude from the University of Houston Honors College with a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature and a minor in dance. While in college, I worked as a Writing Consultant at the University of Houston Writing Center, where I tutored ESL students working on their academic writing, business majors crafting resumes and cover letters, and university students writing papers for their various classes. I love teaching all aspects of English education, but my favorite part is guiding students to find their voice as they talk about great books! I believe that clear, precise language is a powerful tool, and I want to help all of my students to wield it with authority. Let's get to work!

What is your teaching philosophy?
All kids can do great things with the right support.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
In a first session, I'm going to learn as much as I can about my student and his/her goals. I'll ask a bunch of questions and partner with my student to make a great plan for success, whether we're working together for the day or for a year!
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
I can help a student become an independent learner by identifying strengths and areas for growth, filling in any missing information, and then guiding a student through practice. First, I'll do the task. Next, we will do the task together. Finally, the student will do it on her own.
