I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Certified Tutor

I am a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley. I obtained a Bachelor's degree in physics and another in geophysics. My main tutoring experience was at my community college prior to transferring to UC Berkeley. I started tutoring at the Academic Resource Center on a one-on-one basis in various subjects ranging from English to Math. I worked for this program for a few semesters until I obtained my job at the Math Center. The tutoring at the Math Center was on a drop-in basis with mathematic subjects ranging from test prep to differential equations. I worked at the Math Center for the next two years until I transferred. Although I wasn't able to tutor everything, I learned how to balance many different subjects and learning styles at once.

I strongly believe that each individual has their own unique way of learning. Even if I have a preferred way of explaining something, I have learned not to be attached to it. I may understand it one way, but that might not be true for someone else. It's up to me to change and adapt to the situation. If I see something is not clicking with a student I will regroup and will often ask advice from the student. I find it is helpful for everybody if the student can vocalize what part of a problem they are having trouble with. It helps me understand their way of thinking and allows them to be an active participant in their own education.

In my downtime, I enjoy many different hobbies. I'm currently spending as much time as I can hiking. When I hike I bring my longtime best friend; my dog Bart. I love to read, spend time with family and friends, or knit and crochet. I'm also a big fan of playing sports, the traditional (basketball and baseball) and nontraditional (shooting pool and bowling). Another one of my favorite things to do is swing dance. I've been dancing for almost two years and love it more and more each time I go.
