I recently received my bachelors in mathematics this spring. I went to Arizona State University and Glendale Community College to receive my degree. Through my education I have taken many classes in Calculus, Linear Algebra, Geometry, Number Theory, Differential Equations, Physics, Chemistry, Beginning Java, and Group Theory to name a few. It was a lot of work but I love math! Because of this, I hope to take what I have learned to teach others. I figured tutoring students would be a good start to becoming a teacher. So far I have tutored students to pass the Math portion of the Elementary Teacher Certification test. I have also tutored some of my classmates in my math and science courses. I am fully capable of tutoring for many math courses from elementary school to sophomore year college level as well as high school chemistry and physics. Other than loving math, I also love baseball and am a huge Diamondbacks fan! I also have an interest in playing the piano and have taken some piano classes. I plan to continue my educational growth and apply for the Arizona State University Masters program in Mathematics. I am excited to know that my years of math courses will be used to help other students succeed.

What is your teaching philosophy?
My philosophy about teaching is to be patient and use many different tools to explain a topic to a student, since not every student learns the same way.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
In the first session I would get to know the student's best way they learn a subject.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
By helping them understand that they can learn on their own by building on their successes and continuing encouragement.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
By constantly keeping them involved in the tutoring session by asking review questions and acknowledging their success.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
Take time to break down the concept into small, understandable steps.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
Reiterate what is being read so that they understand.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
Listen to their needs and review, review, review.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
Make a game with the subject or make it relevant to their life.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
Checking for the understanding by asking questions or giving a quick quiz, which they would have to take on their own.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
Giving them good feedback when they are understanding the subject.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
Listening to what they are saying that is troubling them, as well as observing their work.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
Slow down and restate things as needed.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
Math books, paper to do problems on, calculators, and geometry utensils.
