Certified Tutor

I was a struggling student throughout high school. I was an athlete with a strong work ethic but just needed more out of the box explanations. I used tutoring myself to help increase my grades and understanding that I found invaluable. Tutoring helped fuel my desire to continue my education and I graduated Cum Laude from La Sierra University. After college, I had the utmost desire to give back to students in the same way other tutors had done for me.

I have been tutoring now for the last two years. I am passionate about helping students to understand and overcome challenges they think they could have never achieved. I have unwavering patience and out of the box ways of thinking of ways to explain material. I pride myself on being able to explain what the teacher cannot. I also find it best to explain the material by applying the concepts to everyday life or specific interests of the students.

How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?

I adapt my tutoring to each student on an individual basis. I find the student's weaknesses with the materials they are struggling with and create a plan that will best strengthen the student's individual learning style.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

If a student cannot find the intrinsic motivation to do well, then I like to provide incentives to the student for completing assignments and/or improving their grades.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Typically in the first session I get to know the student and see in what areas they are struggling so I can better fine-tune the focus of our sessions.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Repetition and practice seems to generate the best results. The more familiar one gets with the material, the more confident they become. We can then further apply and re-apply the concepts to that material to where it becomes second nature.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I would let the student know that I have been in their shoes and came out on top and they can too. They need to know that they are not the only one struggling. My enthusiasm for the material tends to rub off on students. I try to make it as exciting as possible.

How do you evaluate a student's needs?

The student's needs become apparent in their shortcomings, or inability to complete a problem or answer a question with 100% correctness.
