What is your teaching philosophy?

Understand the student's level of comprehension in order to best fulfill their needs.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?

Assess their understanding of the subject matter. Tell them about myself. Learn about their goals and expectations for tutoring and school. Understand how they like to learn.

How can you help a student become an independent learner?

Provide strategies to help them study (e.g., ways to take better notes, how to study their notes, etc.). Stress comprehension and big picture thinking instead of memorization.

How would you help a student stay motivated?

Provide positive feedback. Keep them motivated on their goals. Try to make the subject matter enjoyable.

If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?

First, I would pinpoint exactly why the skill is difficult. Then I would try a new approach to help them master the skill. Perhaps we would need to relearn a previous concept.

What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?

Know exactly what the student is struggling with and work on that material. I want the student to know that no material is too difficult!

How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?

I will go through the reading slowly with the student then ask relevant questions about what we just read.

How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?

I will always be excited about the material myself. I will provide examples for how the subject is relevant. I will examine why the student is struggling and best help them learn. It is a lot easier to be engaged when you understand the material!
