I am very happy with our experience so far with Varsity Tutors. They matched my daughter with reading specialist Mary and she is wonderful! My 10 year old daughter feels happy after her sessions and believes her tutor has already helped her.

Julie: Maryland tutor

Certified Tutor

I went to the College of Wooster in Wooster, Ohio where I earned my bachelor's in Comparative Literature. During my time at Wooster I studied abroad in Paris and Kenya, took many writing courses, child development courses, and completed a 90 page thesis on the study of literature as a tool in children's therapy. I am currently working at City Year New York and am tutoring 6th and 7th graders in English and math. I have a lot of experience tutoring and making learning fun for students of all ages! I love relating academics to the real world. Not only can math be exciting (who doesn't love fractions?!), but I know from personal experience that math is absolutely necessary if you want to learn how to budget your money so that you can live in your own apartment or travel across Europe for three months. My goal as a tutor is to not only teach my students the skills they need for a particular class or problem but also how to continue to use those skills on their own and apply them in new situations as well.

What is your teaching philosophy?

My teaching philosophy is to teach students how to learn, not just what to memorize. What good does it do for somebody to know that 3/4 is equivalent to .75 if they do not understand that that is part of a whole, that those measurements can be the difference between awesome chocolate chip cookies and terrible ones?

How would you help a student stay motivated?

I help students stay motivated by making the subject relevant to their own lives. Why should someone care about writing? Maybe for your student the answer is so that she can express herself in a new way. Or perhaps so that he can write an essay to be accepted to the college of his choice.
