I'm a PhD candidate studying Clinical Psychology. Before that I completed a Masters degree in Mental Health Counseling at New York University and a B.A. in Sociology at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada. I have graded hundreds of term papers over the years, and have led workshops focusing on academic writing. I care about my students' success and utilize my training in counseling psychology in the service of understanding each individual's needs and strengths. My areas of expertize are in:
(1) Teaching students how to learn: Studying and learning should be challenging, meaningful, and empowering. Learning should not meaningless and boring. Although many of us have spent several years studying, rarely are we taught how to learn. I offer my clients strategies and approaches to learning that emphasize efficiency, balance, and self-care. I also work with clients to address the blocks that get in the way of a healthy, productive, and meaningful approach to learning. Specifically, I work with my clients to manage test-anxiety, and to approach their studies and academic challenges in a focused and grounded way.
(2): Writing skills: Teaching an approach to writing that balances academic formality with creative self-expression and critical thinking.
(3): Reading/Critical Thinking skills: I teach reading and critical reasoning skills through focusing on rapid vocabulary acquisition and critical thinking. My approach is evidence-based and draws on 'spaced-repetition' learning methods to facilitate rapid gains in vocabulary.
