Madison: La Grange Park tutor
Certified Tutor
As a 2014 graduate of Florida State University with a Bachelors in Music (Music Therapy), I am a licensed and practicing Music Therapist in North Atlanta. I began my undergraduate career studying Music Performance and Commercial Music, but eventually chose to study Music Therapy because it combined my love for music and helping others.
As a music therapist, I have had many diverse experiences that shape the way I interact with others that transfer naturally to tutoring. I enjoy finding common ground with individuals and using that as a tool to teach by reframing material in a way that is applicable and easily understandable. Music and English/Writing are my favorite subjects to tutor in, as they were my strongest subjects in school, and I also tutor in basic mathematics and enjoy helping others develop strong study skills.
Outside of academic subjects, I enjoy the outdoors, biking, running, and hiking. In my spare time I also enjoy playing music, going to events having to do with the arts, and making (or eating) food!

What is your teaching philosophy?
I believe in caring for the student and cultivating a relationship in which a healthy learning environment can develop. As a tutor, I strive to identify and cater to each individual child's learning style and needs in order to help them achieve their academic goals.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
In a typical first session, I like to get to know the student and their interests first. After briefly discussing their interests and finding common ground with them, I talk with them about the difficulty they are experiencing with the subject(s) they are seeking assistance with. Together, we identify their learning style and needs, and come up with study strategies that will help them master the academic material. Approaching the tutor-student relationship this way not only allows the student to feel comfortable in the learning environment, but also gives me an idea of creative examples I can incorporate that will catch the attention of the student and help them better understand the material.
