Yongmao
Certified Tutor
I have a Ph.D in Organic Chemistry and an MBA in Management Information Systems. I'm an adjunct faculty member teaching Introductory Chemistry, General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Chemistry and Society, and Chemistry for Healthcare Professionals, at the college level.
Throughout my graduate studies, and most recently teaching Chemistry courses at The University of Tampa and Hillsborough Community College, I have gained valuable experience teaching college chemistry lectures, recitations and laboratories. Always, I try my best to get the point of each class across, properly explain the course materials and highlight crucial factors. Chemistry is not easy, therefore, I stimulate great interest that definitely makes the class more fun and more attractive. furthermore, I make a great effort to get the students involved and interested by drawing connections between chemistry in class and life/movies/news, etc.
I am ready to help all students by answering their questions and frequently addressing some questions to them. Whenever my students are struggling, I would make them think of a solution not just tell them the answer. This ensures that my students learn the material. Feedback on assignments as well as learning materials is available to increase understanding and help my students make continuous improvement.

What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
Talk about expectations, short-term and long-term goals, diagnostic tests, and a free-look hour.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
Promote critical thinking while teaching textbook material.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
Frequent test prep sessions well before their classroom tests to stay one or two steps ahead so that students can expect better scores and be self-motivated and confident.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
Conduct a diagnostic test, then find the weakest link or figure which part has to be fixed. Also introduce real-world application of the skill or concept.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
Keep reading everyday. There might not be a shortcut for reading comprehension, just hard work. On the other hand, try to choose the topics that may interest students.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
Start work on Day 1, know their concerns, seek feedback and fix the problem quickly.
How would you help a student get excited/engaged with a subject that they are struggling in?
Real-world application. There is no better tool to motivate students than an improved grade.
What techniques would you use to be sure that a student understands the material?
Independent work and practice.
How do you build a student's confidence in a subject?
Help them understand course material in order to earn a better grade.
How do you adapt your tutoring to the student's needs?
This one-on-one must be customized to serve students better. As different students have different question sets, tutoring can be modified based on our initial discussion.
What types of materials do you typically use during a tutoring session?
Mainly students' course materials, after-chapter questions, and any handout sheets and sample tests.
How do you evaluate a student's needs?
Promote college style critical thinking, teach them course materials, and train them to be problem solvers, not only function boxes.
What is your teaching philosophy?
Continuous improvement.
