Certified Tutor
I have several years of tutoring and teaching experience in a wide range of subjects and worked with all ages. I have tutored elementary school children in reading, phonics, writing, and math, and I gained teaching experience while working as a Peace Corps volunteer in Vanuatu and Costa Rica from 2008 2012 where I taught ages Kindergarten through Adult in a variety of subjects including :
Business, Accounting, Basic/Intermediate Computer Skills, Sustainable Tourism, English as a Foreign Language, Health, and Nutrition.
After living and working in Costa Rica for 16 months, I achieved an Advanced High Spanish proficiency level.
While teaching in the Peace Corps, I attended a total of 6 months of training that covered topics including cross-cultural skills, lesson planning, teaching methods, coaching, project-based-learning, informal education, and classroom management. I learned to develop teaching materials using little resources. Through training and experience, I realized the importance of tailoring teaching methods to an individual student's learning needs.
I always consider how a topic can be approached from a different perspective - one that considers the student's learning style and preferences. After several years of developing additional classroom and learning resources, I enjoy creating fun and supplemental materials that will enhance the student's understanding and interest in a subject. I am patient and understanding and strive to create a comfortable and fun learning environment.
My educational background is in Accounting, International Development, and Environmental Studies. I also love writing and am very interested in helping students who struggle with the writing process to help develop their writing skills through practice and coaching.
I am interested in tutoring in Accounting and Literature/Writing for all levels; Spanish Beginner Advanced; and reading/phonics/writing and math for grades K-8.
Please contact me with any questions. I look forward to hearing from you!

What is your teaching philosophy?
I try to make the student feel comfortable and create a pressure free learning environment. I observe how the student learns best. If not by reading text, I will bring in videos or create games.
How can you help a student become an independent learner?
Reinforce good study habits that work for the student; Praise students for small and big successes; Encourage students to recognize their strengths.
What might you do in a typical first session with a student?
Introduce myself and my background, and let the student share what they want help with, their areas of interest, their goals, and how they like to learn.
How would you help a student stay motivated?
Keep tutoring interesting by appealing to the student's interests. I praise small successes and encourage the student to be proud of their accomplishments and strengths.
If a student has difficulty learning a skill or concept, what would you do?
Spend extra time in this area, apply activities based on the student's learning style, try different ways of explaining the topic, and revisit the topic frequently as it may take a few times before it clicks.
How do you help students who are struggling with reading comprehension?
Teach the student techniques for reading comprehension such as highlighting main ideas and taking notes on what stands out to them.
What strategies have you found to be most successful when you start to work with a student?
Building rapport. Understanding the student's interests and how they learn best. And motivating the student with learning games.
